Hanni El Khatib – Music To Crash Cars & Knife Fight By

Thanks to the very cool folks over at The Wilcox Sessions for putting this video together:

Now I don’t have any proof. But if I had to guess, I’d say Jack White has torturous wet dreams about being Hanni El Khatib. How can you listen to this guy, then go out and buy a Jack White album without feeling like you just looked rock n roll dead in the face and told it to go handjob itself?  I think Jack would agree.

Now I tend to shy away from conspiracy theories. But I’m struggling to find an explanation that doesn’t involve nefarious forces to justify why Hanni still isn’t one of the biggest acts in the country. The only semi-plausible explanation I’ve heard involves the UN. But that would mean the UN would have to establish a plan, agree on it and then fully execute it.  And that sounds like too much of a stretch to me.  Thanks are due to our local Innovative Leisure for helping him get his records out of his head into our hands.

Oh, and if you wanted to see him let loose, here he is whipping some kids into a frenzy over at the Kibbitz:

If you’re still not convinced that he’s one of our few rollicking saviors, go here if you’d like a glimpse of what The White Stripe sees in his nightmares — but give him about a minute to warm up.

— or you can try Simon Cahn & Ricky Saiz‘s entertaining video for “Come Alive”.

— or maybe take a spin with Cahn’s very cool but slightly adult video for “F–k It, You Win”.

P.S. Dan Lee is a pretty, cool dude.

Making Modern Modern Again

Ape On the Moon has an interview with the Lab Partners.  They’re married.  They’re a design team.  And if you’ve ever wished you could’ve grown up when your parents were kids, you’ll probably like their work.

Remember your first year out of college? You would come home drunk every other night, lay down on the floor & put on “Baraka” while blasting the score to “Cremaster 5”. Well put on your big boy pants & save enough money for cab fare. Chris from Scene/Unseen showed me this earlier today — and then my sense of awe crapped itself. Watch it below or see it in HD here.

Cross Your Fingers & Pray…

… that this deal stays together.  Deadline broke the story and now other sources are confirming that Charlie Kaufman is set to adapt “The Knife of Never Letting Go” — a Young Adult, SF-ish novel in Patrick Ness’ Chaos Walking trilogy.

I didn’t know a damn thing about these books until yesterday but it turns out that they’re about a planet where women are extinct — so it’s full of dudes — and all those dudes can hear what all the other dudes are thinking. Then it becomes just your typical story of boy-meets-girl-after-girl-has-crash-landed-on-a-planet-full-of-dudes-and-all-those-dudes-can-hear-what-all-the-other-dudes-are-thinking.

Thank you, Lions Gate. This is almost like living in some absurd Charlie Kaufman movie where a team of Hollywood executives start making a bunch of surprising, inspired creative decisions like hiring Charlie Kaufman to work on the successor to a worldwide phenomenon like “The Hunger Games” so he can afford to develop mind-puppetry and train a gang of mind-puppeteers who then take over Hollywood and manipulate a team of executives into making a bunch of surprising, inspired creative decisions like hiring Charlie Kaufman to work on a movie about Charlie Kaufman developing mind-puppetry so he can afford to train a gang of mind-puppeteers who take over Hollywood and steer an executive into making the inspired, surprising creative decision to hire Charlie Kaufman to work on the successor to a worldwide phenomenon like the one he worked on previously which had been the successor to a worldwide phenomenon like “The Hunger Games”, all of which allowed him to hire a gang of mind-puppeteers…

Paul Cadden & Jason Brooks

I don’t want to call them liars. But I feel like if they’re really creating these with just graphite and/or paint, they must be from the future. And as we all know, those goddam future people are nothing but a bunch of lie-filled nogoodniks.

You be the judge. You can check out Brooks’ paintings here — but you might want to stick to just the Black & White Portraits. The Pee Paintings might create some awkward moments in the workplace.
And Cadden’s drawings are over here.

It’s based on “The Wettest County In The World”.  It’s from the guys that brought you “The Proposition” and it’s about bootlegging.  The cast alone arouses stirrings in my nether region.

And Jessica Chastain is in it, too.

Here’s the trailer:
